On Saturday 28th January we start the Chinese New
Year, and the zodiac predicts that 2017 is unlucky for all of those born in the
year of the Rooster, but here at Urban Eateries we feel this luck can change,
starting off with getting involved in some of London’s best Chinese New Year’s celebrations
which will kick off the evening of January 27th.
Here are our top 5 events taking place throughout the capital full of colour, good food and of course a dragon or two
West End Celebrations
Sunday 29th January

Starting at Trafalgar square and working its way up to China town will be the grand parade - with LCCA promising the biggest dragon and lions procession in Europe this certainly is one not to be missed! A colourful affair surround by craft stalls, some of the best Chinese food stands and martial arts displays by Shaolin monks this parade brings together Londons Chinese community and families excited to join the fun. If you want to dab a hand at learning Cantonese or creating traditional Chinese Crafts head over to Charing Cross Road who will be holding workshops throughout the day.
With such big celebrations surrounding them prepare yourself to see some exclusive offers and menus at the local West End restaurants that will be celebrating too!

To celebrate the new year conductor Long Yu and the Philharmonia Orchestra will be performing London’s inaugural Chinese New Year Gala Concert at the Royal Festival Hall. Expect to hear music from both Western and Chinese Cultures to celebrate the year of the Rooster
The Magical Latern Festival

Chiswick House and Gardens
One of our favourite events to mark the Chinese New Year, returning at Chiswick House for the second year is the Magical Lantern Festival. The journey allows you to explore over 50 illuminated illustrations featuring the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben, alongside the tale of Aladdin. If that alone wasn’t enough there will also be a pop up ice bar, ice rink and virtual reality gaming experience to ensure fun for all the family! Chinese New Year at the National Maritime Museum

A family fun event held at the NMM celebrating British East Asian heritage with workshops and performances across the weekend. A perfect event to teach yourselves and the little ones about our history of trade and culture exchange with China.

Every hour from 4pm the London eye will join the citywide celebrations displaying a red and gold light show as well as a range of surprises to ensure the new years kicks off with a bang. Be sure to visit to enjoy the lights, dragon dancer and stalls. Rumours have it there is also due to be a special appearance of the Kung Fu Panda!
